Newtown College launches Employment programme

Newtown College and businesses in Powys are working together to help students get ‘Career Ready’ as it launches an Employment Bureau and Employer in Residence Programme.

The Employment Bureau will offer a one-stop-shop for students, supporting them with enterprise and employability skills and providing advice and guidance to support a positive employment or self-employment outcome. Students can visit the bureau for support in CV writing, application form support, mock interviews, start-up support and any other career queries a student might have. Careers Wales will also be regular visitors to the bureau offering advice and guidance.

Employers from the area will have direct access to students too as part of the Employer in Residence Programme which will run every Tuesday and Wednesday when an employer will ‘takes over’ the bureau for the day. Students will have the opportunity to access the same advice and guidance, but the support will come directly from the employer, giving students exclusive access to their potential future employers. Newtown College is the first in Wales to offer the service.

The team responsible already deliver career advice and provide employment opportunities to students and has business start-up offices in Neath College which are available to current and former students. The Employer in Residence programme however is unique to Newtown College, but similar schemes will be rolled out at Neath College and Brecon Beacons College.

Gemma Charnock, Vice Principal, External Relations and Group Company said: “We have been working with employers and understand the need to encourage young people to study and work in Powys. We want our students to be career ready and equip them with the right skills, whilst offering advice and support to help them secure employment in the area. The Employer in Residence programme will allow the employers to engage with students and we believe this is a big step forward and shows how local business and the College can work together for the good of the community.”
