Rali Ceredigion To Use European Rally Platform To Showcase Automotive Sustainability

The Aberystwyth-based Rali Ceredigion motorsport event received a huge boost last month after being accepted as the UK’s round of the 2024 FIA European Rally Championship – bringing the major international series back to Wales for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Inspired by the success and acclaim achieved following the inaugural event, Rali Ceredigion organisers have worked closely with regional stakeholders, commercial partners and local authorities to secure the resources and infrastructure necessary to support this major step forward for the event.

From the outset the event has prioritised environmental sustainability and promoted initiatives to help decarbonise transport to both motorsport fans and the general public. It was the first UK rally to hold a class for electric rally cars and this year it pioneered the use of sustainable race fuel in the UK and invited a state-of-the-art hybrid M-Sport world rally car to entertain fans on its Aberystwyth street stage.

“Sustainability is one of the critical pillars of the event and we’ve always taken the approach of promoting decarbonisation initiatives to both educate communities and ensure the event leaves a positive environmental legacy,” explained Commercial Manager Charlie Jukes.

“We are the only rally in the UK which has achieved the international FIA environmental accreditation and our official vehicles use HVO diesel, which reduces emissions by 90%. This year we engaged in a carbon offsetting programme achieving 100 tCO2e, one of the highest levels in world rallying, and pioneered the use of sustainable race fuels.

“However, we see huge potential to use the event as a platform to educate the public on the changing landscape around motoring and transport powered by alternative fuels, e-fuels, electric motors and green hydrogen production – and to demonstrate the viability of sustainable fuels.

“Wales has the potential to be at the forefront of sustainable fuel development and, with our event now part of the FIA European Rally Championship and benefitting from global exposure with action broadcast to 30 international markets, it’s a unrivalled chance to position Wales firmly on the world stage.”
